A long time ago, sometime around 1995, a young family man, Kevin Peil, was given a special gift for Father's Day. That special gift was a home brewing kit. The first batch of beer was a labor of love - an Irish Red or something, it's hard to say. But whatever it was, it was wonderful!
Fast forward 10 years to 2005. Kevin found himself surrounded by good friends, many of whom turned out to also be home brewers. All home brewers talk about someday opening a brewery, and Kevin and his friends talked the same talk. After talking and talking about opening a brewery, one day they decided to do just that. So after a couple of years of planning and several drafts of a business plan, they pooled their money and set out to open a brewery. It took two years of hard work (and almost twice the amount of money they originally thought), but their dream finally became a reality - Tri City Brewing was born.
Tri City Brewing took its name from the three cities - Bay City, Saginaw, Midland located in the eastern part of the lower peninsula of Michigan. These three cities are collective known as the Tri Cities which at one time was quite the hub for brewing! But that time had long past with the likes of Kolb Brothers, Bay City Brewing, Phoenix Brewing, and Saginaw Brewing all falling by the wayside.
So Tri City Brewing opened its doors in 2007 as mid-Michigan's first independent brewery in more than 50 years. Tri City Brewing released its first commercial beer, Phoenix Golden Ale, on January 17, 2007. Phoenix Golden Ale took its name from the last independent brewery that operated in Bay City, The Phoenix Brewing Company. Phoenix Golden Ale is no longer produced for distribution but does occasionally make a return appearance in our tap room!
In 2012 we opened our tap room to the public for the first time. Our tap room is open to the public Wednesday and Thursday from 4:00 pm to 11:00 pm, Friday from 2:00 pm to 12:00 am, Saturday from 12:00 pm to 12:00 am, and Sunday from 12:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Our tap room features a wide variety of beers that are not distributed. We are always playing around with different styles as well as different barrel aged beers. At least once a month we feature a new beer on draft! So every time you stop by you are sure to see a couple of new styles of beer available.
Currently Tri City Brewing is represented throughout the State of Michigan by seven different distributors. Here locally we are represented by Fabiano Brothers, in the southern part of Michigan we are represented by Henry Fox Sales, in the northeastern part of Michigan by Alpena Beverage, in the thumb of Michigan we are represented by Earl Smith Distribution as well as Smith Distribution. Finally, in the eastern part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan we are represented by Marchetti Distribution and in the middle of the UP by Pike Distributors.
Tri City Brewing is very proud of its relation with Meijer Stores in that every Meijer in the state of Michigan carries at least one of our brands of beer. You will be able to find our most popular beer - Hell's Half Mile Helles Lager - on the shelf at every Meijer as well as our Giant Slayer Russian Imperial Stout in most Meijer stores. We also have our beers available in many of the Spartan stores in the southwest and northwest part of Michigan.
Tri City Brewing has been a uniquely envisioned company from the beginning. Relying on the private investments of local residents of the Mid-Michigan area, Tri City Brewing was created, built and continue to operate through the hard work and passion of the dedicated pool of investor owners.
The rest of our history is still being written. So check back often, and we thank you very much for your support of mid-Michigan's finest microbrewery - Tri City Brewing!
To all of you, from all of us - Thank you!
